Joseph Pilates Home , Footage of Original Pilates Apparatus; Joseph Pilates at Jacob's Pillow


 Quatro vídeos com interesse documental, não só para quem gosta de Pilates, mas também para quem tem curiosidade em conhecer a história da evolução do exercício físico em geral.
   Documentos que têm também a virtude de  concretizarem  uma quase abstracção ao  revelarem aspectos da vida e da personalidade de Joseph Pilates.    
 Em  1964  escrevia-se no New York Herald Tribune : “Em aulas de dança pelos Estados Unidos, centenas de jovens treinam diariamente um exercício que conhecem como sendo Pilates, sem saber que a palavra tem letra maiúscula e corresponde ao nome próprio de uma pessoa real e viva". 
   O método Pilates generalizou- se  e é ensinado´e praticado  por muita gente - cada vez mais- em todo o mundo.
  No entanto em 2018 mantém-se, inexplicavelmente, o desconhecimento geral relatado em 1964.  É também por isso que estes registos são fundamentais  e escolas como a Jacob's Pillow Dance ( a "meca da dança"), o seu arquivo , festival e trabalho de   divulgação públicos , têm um valor inestimável.   

  A) Joseph Pilates HomeBelates history. See the studio that Joe built, the tiny hunting shack they lived in, the gate (built by Joe) that fronts the property, the mysterious beginnings of more buildings and more. Sean Gallagher, the property's current owner, shares his story of how he came to purchase the property, details what he found there when he took possession, and what he intends to do with it in the future.


B) Footage of Original Pilates Apparatus
 In this 2nd part of our visit to Joe and Clara Pilates' summer home in Becket, Massachusetts, you'll see exclusive footage of the apparatus that was left, practically untouched since the 1960s, in the studio Joe built there. Sean Gallagher shows us original items like the V Beds Joe and Clara slept on, an early version of the Arm Chair, a Reformer built for home use, a Cadillac, an Electric Chair that was originally a Wunda Chair, Magic Circles, and more.




C) Joseph Pilates at Jacob's Pillow
JosephPilates taught for approximately 15 years at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in Becket, Massachusetts and bought a large piece of property a short distance away where he and Clara visited often. In this fascinating interview, Norton Owen, Archivist at Jacob's Pillow, shares a glimpse into Joe's personality, activities and ambitions seen through the records left behind. See photographs, notes taken by students in Joe's classes, an extremely candid letter about Joe written by Pillow founder Ted Shawn, and more.

This excerpt from an hour-long PillowTalk features remembrances of Joseph H. Pilates by some of those who studied with him at Jacob's Pillow in the 1940s and 1950s, along with commentary by Pilates practitioner Sean Gallagher, Scholar-in-Residence Philip Szporer, and Director of Preservation Norton Owen.
